Project Name: Ruinenberg
Project Credits: Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff
Project Brief Description:

Ruinenberg is a complex of artificial ruins built in 1748 under the command of Frederick the Great on the north side of the Sansoucci Park in Potsdam, Germany. The commision was awarded to Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff, in collaboration with theater painter Innocente Bellavite.
The ruins served as the background for a great pool sitting on top of the hill, intended to feed all the irrigation and fountain systems of the park. A great scenery layout was designed, where the back porch of the summer Sanssouci palace had an opening to a straight line clearing in the back forest, perfectly framing the view of these 'remains'. Ruinenberg became one of the first examples of a trend of artificial ruins in Germany throughout the 18th and 19th century.
